Panelists explored how his interest in the emotional power of moving drapery, dancing bodies, and gestural expression in Renaissance art anticipated contemporary research in neuroaesthetics and embodied cognition.
A major thread of discussion concerned the intersection of psychoanalysis and neuroscience in understanding aesthetic experience. Participants examined Vittorio Gallese's research on mirror neurons and motor system activation when viewing artworks, demonstrating that the beholder's body unconsciously responds to artistic gestures and marks. 00:12:34 his approach was perhaps particularly today when we are experiencing a new way of a new form of dialogue between disciplines that at first sight may look as remote as possible like the study of the brain and the study of art of culture and warburg embodies uh i think in a marvelous way
00:13:05 this curiosity and this attempt to bridge a different field of expertise particularly because cognitive neuroscience is very popular every every day we read the back the big headlines in the newspaper or we discover what romantic love is all about we discovered a tiny little area where beauty sits and the like this um i would say uh uh outrageously
00:13:38 excessive form of reductionism needs to be tempered by an open dialogue with people that because of their background tend to look at the individual in in a more holistic way so we must bring back the brain to where it belongs to the body in the first place but this brain body complex it makes sense to study it
00:14:10 to the extent that even if we move from a methodological reductionist approach so we are dealing with the nuts and bolts so to speak of what it means to be human the ultimate goal must be to go back to the holistic view of human nature and if we want to do that we cannot live out uh from our investigation uh artistic expression creativity and how this relates to something which
00:14:42 is hidden in our psychology so i think that psychoanalysis neuroscience uh the humanities broadly speaking now finally are in um in a position to to collaborate to this very exciting uh enterprise of shedding light on who we are uh exploiting also uh this new level of description that cognitive
00:15:12 neuroscience and i think a prominent figure to bless so to speak this enterprise i couldn't imagine a better figure than abigail book so as i was thinking about today's meeting i thought i didn't think of myself as a neuro-aesthetician i think of myself as an art historian who makes use of tools that seem to me that will illuminate
00:15:44 the objects of our studies and as many of you know i have long insisted on the importance of opening one's mind to science and not getting too anxious about the alleged reductivism of science but as i was thinking about today's symposium i realized that probably once one was a child and suddenly one is old and probably i may have been in this audience the first person to have gone to the warburg institute um so i wondered when i could just begin
00:16:14 with a little background um so i arrived in oxford to do my graduate work in art history at the end of 1969 and francis haskell who had just taken over from another great and extraordinary hermeneut and art historian edgar vint who was a warburgian of course was a high british positivist and he looked at me and he said you can't study here go to the warburg institute in london so i went to the warburg institute so that was at the end of 1969
00:16:45 and as i was reflecting on the direction of warburg and studies and the ways in which many of us here including myself and vittorio have sort of seen the links between a b var book and neuroscience i realized that it wasn't always so because when i got to the warburg institute the emphasis was completely on both michael backs and all and anne sconbrick were completely on the nagleben there antiqua gombrick had done his own stuff on perception as we all know in art and
00:17:15 delusion but the real bergen work at that time and throughout the 1970s and even into the 1980s was really about iconography and the night lavender antica so when i wrote the power of images sort of thinking about the other s aspect of a b var book which has now come to the fore in other words this kind of psychological roots of human responses to images embodied above all in the whole notion

00:25:41 content of what they're talking about what they're thinking about what they're dreaming about what they associate so on and so forth but neuroscience in some ways seems to be somewhere in between at least the way it's typically practiced which is on the one hand our methods are driven to try to generalize it's the inherent nature of much of empirical research is you want to get generalizable principles but not typically so generalizable that they are
00:26:11 applicable to cultural theories and the very inherent nature of generalizing is that we typically tend to be less interested in the individual right the individual becomes one exemplar of a general principle that we're trying to derive right and psychoanalysis on the one hand seems to be seems to drill down at the individual and the content of the experience of the individual that we typically try to do away with in in most neuroscience studies
