Wood earned his A.B. from Harvard in 1983 and Ph.D. from Harvard in 1991. He has taught at Yale since 1992 and held visiting positions at UC Berkeley, Vassar College, and Hebrew University in Jerusalem. His fellowships include the Society of Fellows at Harvard, the American Academy in Rome and Berlin, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and the Internationales Forschungszentrum fur Kulturwissenschaften in Vienna. He received the Jacob Wendell Scholarship (1980) and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship (2002). From 1999-2002, he served as Book Review Editor of the Art Bulletin. He authored Albrecht Altdorfer and the Origins of Landscape (1993), Forgery, Replica, Fiction: Temporalities of German Renaissance Art (2008, won the Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize), and co-authored Anachronic Renaissance (2010). He edited The Vienna School Reader: Politics and Art Historical Method in the 1930s (2000).
