Montero's scholarly interests span two interconnected domains of "body" -- the physical substance of reality and the embodied instrument we employ in physical activities. Her research investigates physicalism, dualism, and naturalism within the framework of "actual-world metaphysics," examining what exists rather than hypothetical scenarios. She also explores proprioception, aesthetics, and consciousness in expert performance. Her Guggenheim Fellowship supports investigations into these topics. She has authored "Thought in Action: Expertise and the Conscious Mind" (2016) and co-authored "Continuous Improvement: Intertwining Mind and Body in Athletic Expertise" (2022) with psychologists John Toner and Aidan Moran. Her work has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, American Society for Aesthetics, and other institutions.
