Ralph Wharton serves as Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, specializing in the clinical use of psychotropic medicines alone and in conjunction with psychotherapy or psychoanalysis. His research on lithium carbonate in affective psychoses was recognized in the American Journal of Psychiatry's 150-year retrospective. He has published extensively on methylphenidate, electrical brain stimulation, and phantom limb pain. Wharton held leadership roles including President of the Society of Practitioners at Columbia Medical Center (Practitioner of the Year, 2010) and President of the American College of Psychoanalysts. He founded and co-directed the Reiner Center for Behavioral Medicine at Presbyterian Hospital for three decades. As a founding member of the International Society for the study of Pain, he co-authored research on pain tolerance among Sherpa guides, published in Science. He serves as a Distinguished Life Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and New York Academy of Medicine.
