Vogel trained as an American social and urban historian at Brandeis University (B.A. 1967) and the University of Chicago (Ph.D. 1974). He joined Temple University's faculty in Philadelphia in 1973, becoming a professor in 1985 and serving as dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 1999-2003. He subsequently directed the Rockefeller Foundation's Creativity and Culture Program. Vogel authored or edited six books on American social and cultural history, including The Invention of the Modern Hospital and Cultural Connections. He co-founded and directed an NEH-funded regional humanities center and served on Pennsylvania's Historic Preservation Board. Vogel was born in Kazakhstan to stateless refugee parents. He resides in Manhattan with his wife Ruth, a clinical psychologist, and has two adult sons.
