Biography

Turner is a theoretical astrophysicist who helped to pioneer the interdisciplinary field of particle astrophysics and cosmology. His scholarly contributions include predicting cosmic acceleration and coining the term dark energy and work on quantum fluctuations during cosmic inflation. He formerly served as President of the American Physical Society and holds the position of Director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at Chicago. His education includes a B.S. from Caltech (1971), M.S. (1973), and Ph.D. (1978) from Stanford. Currently, he serves on multiple national committees and boards, including the NRC's Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy.
