Van De Mieroop specializes in ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian history from the emergence of writing through the Hellenistic period. Beyond his Columbia role, he has held positions at Oxford and Yale, directing Columbia's Center for the Ancient Mediterranean. His scholarly output encompasses socio-economic, political, and intellectual history alongside methodological investigations. Notable publications include "Philosophy before the Greeks: The Pursuit of Truth in Ancient Babylonia" (Princeton University Press, 2015), available in Chinese, Turkish, and Czech translations, and the forthcoming "Before and After Babel: Writing as resistance in ancient Near Eastern Empires" from Oxford University Press. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, ACLS, NEH, and Vienna's Internationales Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften.
