Sreenivasan holds multiple professorships at NYU across Physics, the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He arrived at NYU following tenures at Yale (over 20 years with multiple endowed positions), University of Maryland (where he directed the Institute for Physical Science and Technology), and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy (as director and Abdus Salam Professor). He has visited at Caltech, Cambridge University, Rockefeller University, and Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. His research encompasses fluid mechanics and turbulence, nonlinear and nonequilibrium phenomena, cryogenic helium and stellar physics. He holds memberships in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and academies in India, Rome, and Africa. Honors include the Guggenheim Fellowship, Otto Laporte Memorial Award, Dwight Nicholson Medal, and UNESCO Medal for Promoting International Scientific Cooperation and World Peace.
