Schaefer hosts and produces WNYC's long-running new music program "New Sounds," established in 1982, alongside its "Soundcheck" podcast featuring live performances and interviews since 2002. He launched "The Furthermore" on WQXR in January 2017. He founded the New Sounds Live concert series in 1986, showcasing new works and commissioned pieces, held primarily at Brookfield Place and Merkin Concert Hall in New York. His published works include "New Sounds: A Listener's Guide to New Music" (Harper & Row, 1987; Virgin Books, 1990), contributions to the "Cambridge Companion to Singing: World Music" (Cambridge University Press, 2000), and the television program "Bravo Profile: Bobby McFerrin" (2003). Additionally, he authored "Bloodlines: A Horse Racing Anthology" (Vintage, 2006) and served as a panelist on the BBC's "Sports World."
