Dr. Silbersweig earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in philosophy and attended Cornell University Medical College. He trained in both psychiatry and neurology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center, followed by functional brain imaging research at London's Medical Research Council Cyclotron Unit. At Cornell, he founded the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory with Dr. Emily Stern, established the Division of Neuropsychiatry, and created the Neurology-Psychiatry Combined Residency Program. He held positions as Tobin-Cooper Professor of Psychiatry and Professor of Neurology and Neurosciences before moving to Harvard. At Brigham and Women's Hospital, he served as Department of Psychiatry Chairman, Institute for the Neurosciences Chairman, and Co-Director of the Center for the Neurosciences. He also served as Academic Dean at Harvard Medical School for seven years. His research pioneered functional neuroimaging in psychiatry and neuropsychiatry, identifying neural circuit abnormalities in schizophrenia, Tourette syndrome, depression, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder. He is President-Elect of the American Neuropsychiatric Association and founding Vice Chairman of the National Network of Depression Centers' Governing Board.
