David Rosenthal holds professorships in philosophy at the Graduate Center with courtesy appointments spanning linguistics and cognitive neuroscience. He coordinates the Graduate Center's Interdisciplinary Concentration in Cognitive Science. His scholarly work encompasses consciousness, mental perception, representational thought, emotions, and the self. His 2005 book, Consciousness and Mind, presents his theory that a psychological state is conscious if it is accompanied by a thought to the effect that one is in that state. Additional research addresses emotions, the mind-body problem, and thought-speech relations, with occasional forays into early modern and ancient philosophy plus methodological studies of philosophical history. He previously served as president of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness and held visiting professorships at Nihon University (Tokyo) and Washington University (St. Louis), plus research fellowships at Universities of Bielefeld, Bremen, and Oxford. His credentials include a Ph.D. from Princeton and an A.B. from the University of Chicago.
