Richard A. Shweder is a cultural anthropologist at the University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. in social anthropology from Harvard University's Department of Social Relations in 1972, taught at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and has remained at Chicago since then. His publications include Thinking Through Cultures: Expeditions in Cultural Psychology and Why Do Men Barbecue? Recipes for Cultural Psychology. He edited The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion, a reference work on diversity in child and adolescent development. Professional honors include John Simon Guggenheim and Carnegie Scholar fellowships, the American Association for the Advancement of Science Socio-Psychological Prize, and Fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as President of the Society for Psychological Anthropology and received their 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. His research focuses on moral reasoning, emotional functioning, gender roles, illness explanations, and family life practices, conducted primarily in Bhubaneswar, India.
