Biography
Ray C. Dougherty is an American linguist who was one of the first students of Noam Chomsky at MIT, earning his PhD in linguistics for work on coordinate structures and recursion in language. He also completed the MIT PhD program in electrical engineering studying the mathematical communication theories of Shannon, Turing, and von Neumann. His interdisciplinary research spanned linguistics, signal processing, computational biology, and semiotics, including work with Konrad Lorenz on formalizing animal sensori-motor capacities.
