Her research explores dark matter, dark energy, and black holes. She has made significant contributions to mapping dark matter distribution in galaxy clusters through gravitational lensing and studying black hole growth histories. She serves on the Advisory Board of NOVA ScienceNow and advocates for numerical literacy. Her book "Mapping the Heavens: Radical Ideas That Reveal The Cosmos" received an honorable mention from the Association of American Publishers and was a finalist for Physics World's Top 10 Science Books. She is also a published poet. Natarajan holds the Sophie and Tycho Brahe Professorship at the Dark Center, Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and an Honorary Professorship at the University of Delhi. She earned undergraduate degrees in Physics and Mathematics from MIT, a Master's in Science and Technology Studies, and a Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics from Cambridge University's Institute of Astronomy, where she was the first woman elected as a fellow of Trinity College.
