Biography

Dr. Schiff directs an integrative translational research program with a primary focus on understanding the process of recovery of consciousness following brain injuries. His work combines basic and clinical neuroscience to develop diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. His research group achieved significant breakthroughs, including demonstrating structural brain changes during late-stage recovery from severe injuries. More recently, his team used insights into the neurophysiological mechanisms of arousal regulation and of deep brain electrical stimulation techniques to show that electrical stimulation of the human central thalamus may influence severe cognitive disability. He received the 2007 Research Award for Innovation in Neuroscience from the Society for Neuroscience.
