Biography

Professor Maura Spiegel holds dual leadership roles in narrative medicine and English studies at Columbia. Her teaching emphasizes fiction and film with thematic focus on family, memory, place, and affect. She previously served seven years as co-editor-in-chief of Literature and Medicine (Hopkins U.P.). Her publications include co-authorship of The Grim Reader: Writings on Death, Dying and Living On (Anchor/Doubleday) and The Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine (Oxford University Press), plus a biography of filmmaker Sidney Lumet (St. Martin's Press).
