Joyce E. Chaplin is the James Duncan Phillips Professor of Early American History at Harvard University, where she teaches the histories of science, climate, colonialism, and the environment. Her major works include Round about the Earth: Circumnavigation from Magellan to Orbit, The First Scientific American: Benjamin Franklin and the Pursuit of Genius, and Subject Matter: Technology, the Body, and Science on the Anglo-American Frontier. She is an elected member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
