Biography

Dr. Veenstra-VanderWeele is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who uses molecular and translational neuroscience research tools in the pursuit of new treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related genetic syndromes. His training encompasses human molecular genetics at the University of Chicago and molecular neuroscience at Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on the serotonin, oxytocin and glutamate systems in genetic mouse models with abnormal social or repetitive behavior. He also maintains a clinical/translational program studying novel treatments for autism and Fragile X Syndrome. He joined Columbia University, the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and related affiliated institutions in 2014 to continue developing treatments for children with these conditions.
