Biography

Valentine has contributed poetry to American literature for over fifty years. Her debut collection, Dream Barker and Other Poems, received the Yale Younger Poets Prize in 1965. Her work Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems, 1965-2003 won the National Book Award in 2004, while Break the Glass was a 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist. She has received fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and Guggenheim Foundation. Additional honors include the Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America and the Wallace Stevens Award from the American Academy of Poets.
