Biography

Von Mucke holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Stanford University and has taught at Columbia since 1988, with visiting professorships in Berlin and Giessen. She specializes in eighteenth-century literature, Romantic literature, and literary theory. Her publications include three books: Virtue and the Veil of Illusion (1991), Body and Text in the Eighteenth Century (1994, co-edited), and The Seduction of the Occult and the Rise of the Fantastic Tale (2003). She co-edited The New History of German Literature (2004) and completed The Practices of the Enlightenment: Aesthetics, Authorship and Audiences, published by Columbia University Press in May 2015.
